In the Somontano area we can find the extraordinary full bodied red wines that are so typical of the region, but we can also find rosé wines with their bright colour, delicate aroma and smooth finish. In terms of white wines, what stands out is the fruitiness, freshness, acidity and aroma of each variety. The varieties cultivated in the area are: the reds Moristel, Tempranillo, Grenache, Parraleta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah; together with the whites Macabeo, white Grenache, Alcañón, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
In total, there are more than one hundred brands on the market, among which we can find young wines, crianzas, reservas, whites fermented in the barrel, single varieties, specially created wines and designer wines.
In the French part, full bodied and robust red wines, such as those from Madiran, coexist with wines of great finesse, such as those from Gaillac and Fronton.
In this South-West region one can find a true mosaic of varieties, including some which are very traditional and unique to the region.
Among the red wines, we have the light and elegant wines from Fronton, Brulhois, and Marcillac; the powerful wines from Madiran and Saint Mont; and the exquisite wines from Gaillac, Pacherenc, Vic-Bilh and Côtes de Gascogne. As a result, in this area any palate can discover the pure pleasure and happiness of living.
While négrette, servadou, duras, tannat, malbec and other varieties retain the identity and personality of the red wines from the South-West, others such as colombard, mauzac, manseng, courbu, baroque and len de l’el help to demonstrate the often unknown delight of the dry and melodic white wines from the region.
